GC Robertson is proud to contribute to the Level Two Youth Project, a transformative initiative located at Felixstowe’s Beach Street, where shipping containers are reimagined as dynamic community spaces. Collaborating with architect Robert Allerton, we provided structural and civil engineering expertise to support the creation of a hub that includes common rooms, consulting areas, and music studios.
Structural Appraisal
The design centres around stacked shipping containers, a choice that offers both strength and versatility. Our structural appraisal ensured that the modifications – such as openings for windows and doors – did not compromise the containers’ load-bearing integrity. We also engineered reinforcements to support a green roof, accounting for the additional weight of soil, vegetation, and water retention systems.
Sustainable Drainage (SuDS) Advice
Flood risk mitigation and sustainable water management were key priorities. The green roof was designed to act as a primary sustainable drainage system (SuDS), capturing and managing rainfall to reduce surface runoff. We incorporated robust overflow systems to handle deluge scenarios and ensured compliance with Policy SCLP9.6 by providing detailed solutions for surface and foul water drainage. This included connecting the toilet facilities to a private drain beneath the site.
This project not only showcases the potential of innovative engineering but also underscores the power of design to create spaces that inspire and serve the community. By combining modular architecture with sustainable practices, we are helping to bring this vision to life for the Level Two Youth Project – a space where creativity and community can thrive.
