GC Robertson is proud to have delivered the structural engineering design for the transformation of the former Patrick Stead Hospital in Halesworth, Suffolk- now beautifully reborn as Patrick Stead Row, a collection of luxury new homes that blend heritage with modern living.

With its origins dating back to the 1880s, this iconic red-brick building has served as a cornerstone of care for generations. Today, it enters a new chapter – as a vibrant residential development overlooking the Suffolk countryside.

The Challenge: Reimagining a Historic Structure

Refurbishing a former hospital into luxury homes is no ordinary job. This project required sensitive structural design that respected the building’s legacy while enabling contemporary living standards.

Working closely with the developer and design team, GC Robertson delivered:

• Internal structural reconfiguration to support new layouts
• Strengthening works to preserve the existing structure
• Foundations and load assessments tailored to original materials

Every detail had to strike a balance between retaining character and ensuring safety, comfort, and compliance – all while working within the constraints of a heritage site.

Building on Local Legacy

The original Patrick Stead Hospital opened in 1882, funded by the bequest of local businessman and philanthropist Patrick Stead. The hospital served the community through two world wars and well into the NHS era, finally closing in 2015.

This transformation into Patrick Stead Row marks a new era for this important local landmark – and we’re proud to have played a part in preserving its presence for future generations.
